MJBizCon, the world’s largest cannabis business conference and trade show, once again is offering scholarships for social equity license applicants and license holders to attend the Dec. 3-6 event in Las Vegas.

Scholarship recipients will receive a full conference and trade show pass, along with tickets to the Achieving Equity in Cannabis and Empowering Women in Cannabis networking events.

In 2023, 35 individuals from a dozen states were selected for MJBizCon’s Social Equity Scholarship Program, with applications evaluated by:

  • BipoCann
  • Minorities for Medical Marijuana
  • Minority Cannabis Business Association
  • Social Equity and Empowerment Network
  • Women Grow

“This scholarship is an excellent opportunity for those looking to elevate their knowledge and expand their network in the cannabis industry,” said Antoine Mordican, owner and CEO of Native Black Cultivation in Bessemer, Alabama.

“As a recipient of the 2023 Social Equity Scholarship, I am deeply grateful for the chance to connect with respected individuals in the cannabis industry.”

‘Contribute positively’ to community

The 2023 scholarship winners had the opportunity to meet Martin Luther King III at MJBizCon, where the social justice leader spoke about the growing trend of unionization in the cannabis industry.

Kenyatta Harris, the New Mexico-based owner and CEO of The People’s Dispensary powered by Dash For Canna delivery, said meeting MLK III was inspiring.

“I am determined to make the most of this opportunity to contribute positively to the community,” Harris said.

“Your generous support has enlightened me and changed my perspective.”

How to apply

To be eligible for the 2024 Social Equity Scholarship Program, applicants must be executives at plant-touching marijuana companies in one of the following categories:

  • Brand/manufacturing
  • Cultivation
  • Extraction/processing
  • Retail

Applicants will be required to provide proof of their social equity license or license application; the program is not open to executives of ancillary businesses.

Students who are actively enrolled in a cannabis program at an accredited college also may be considered.

“Ensuring equal access and opportunities within this space is essential for fostering innovation, diversity and community empowerment,” said 2023 scholarship winner Duane Harden, chief financial officer and co-owner at BlazeXpress Weed Delivery in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

BlazeXpress was awarded a provisional courier license in November 2021 and began operations in early 2023.

“The conference provided unparalleled opportunities to network, learn, and engage with industry leaders,” he said.
