Stocks fell Wednesday after a fresh batch of producer prices and retail sales data offered mixed signs of how the economy is weathering the Federal Reserve’s tightening campaign.

The S&P 500 shed 0.7% in late-morning trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1%, or about 340 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index edged down 0.5%. All three major indexes gave up gains from early trading.
